Burn After Reading is a 2008 black comedy film directed by the Coen brothers. The movie takes place in Washington D.C. and follows the story of two gym employees, Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) and Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt), who stumble upon a CD containing memoirs of Osbourne Cox (John Malkovich), a former CIA analyst. Linda, desperate to improve her physical appearance with plastic surgery, sees an opportunity to make some quick cash by selling the CD to the highest bidder. She enlists the help of her co-worker Chad, and together they try to peddle the valuable information on the black market. However, things quickly spiral out of control as various government agents and operatives become involved in the pursuit of the CD. The film's narrative is a complex web of misadventures and misunderstandings, featuring a cast of eccentric characters including Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), a suave but troubled Treasury Department agent; Ted Treffon (Richard Jenkins), a reclusive intelligence analyst; and Kurt Czernowicz (John Mahoney), the Director of National Intelligence. Throughout the film, the Coen brothers' trademark dark humor and irony are on full display. The movie's tone is fast-paced and absurd, with a series of ridiculous events unfolding as the characters struggle to navigate the chaos they've created. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the true value of the CD lies not in its contents, but in the paranoia and mistrust it inspires among those who seek it. In the end, Burn After Reading is a wry commentary on the absurdity and excess of modern life, as well as the blurred lines between reality and fiction.
